There are 3 kinds of wrong doing that are most prominent in Scripture. Sin, which means to miss the mark; transgression, which means to disobey willfully and knowingly; and lastly, iniquity which is generational sin. Iniquity is a generational curse. Generational curses are mentioned throughout the scriptures. Exodus 34:7 AMPLIFIED states that 7Keeping mercy and loving-kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but Who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and fourth generation.

There are predispositions that an individual may have to certain kinds of sin because someone in their bloodline entered into it. People may struggle with things that someone they’ve never met engaged in. It is not that they can not control their own actions and choices, it is that they are predisposed with varying tendencies. The Scripture says that we were all born into sin and in our flesh there is nothing good. This is why someone who struggles with alcoholism might say “I was born this way,” or someone who doesn’t seem to be able to break a particular negative habit may continue their struggle. Again, we have the power to make choices and can not simply say “The devil made me do it.”

Christ is a perfect example of breaking any generational curses. His bloodline was filled with people full of sin, iniquity and transgression, yet He choose not to follow after their error. When we come into Christ we must understand that we have had a bloodline shift and we are reborn into a new family. Opposed to focusing on the curses, we ought to focus on the blessing that God has allowed us to be born into. The blessing outweighs the curse, but only according to our words. When we say things like “you’ll be just like your daddy” or “you’re acting like your no good mother,” we are affirming the curse rather than walking in the blessing.

When you come into Christ, you are a brand new creation in Christ and old things have passed away and all things have become new. Speak the blessing everyday. He became every curse for us according to Galatians 3:13 so that we wouldn’t have to walk in that. Break the curse by choosing to walk in the blessing.

Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend [to show rage or worthy purpose].

There are two kinds of relationships - vertical and horizontal. Developing a healthy and solid relationship takes time, commitment, and honesty. Many people have friends that are really designed to be life leeches and not life builders. Many people receive counsel from people that may have questionable motives. Most of the times the motives of someone in your life aren’t made clear until troubles arise. You don’t need friends that will baby you and encourage you to be anything less than what God has ordained for you to be.

Real friends will challenge you to step up to a higher level in life and to be a better person. A real friend will have your best interests at heart even if that means going contrary to what you think or feel. A real friend will sharpen you and make you strive to be better.   You can identify real friends (horizontal relationship) when you have a strong relationship with Christ (vertical relationship). You’ll be able to spot a person’s motives from a mile away. You don’t have time to spend on relationships that are designed to work against you. You are in pursuit of what God has ordained for you and can not afford to be distracted.

Leeches are there to suck the blood or life out of you. When you talk to them you feel completely drained and your passion fades. They are always sowing seeds of doubt in you and always making an effort to kill your dreams. Real friends will help you to enhance and think through your dream, but will never kill it.   You must pray for God to give you the spirit of discernment because you don’t need leeches, you need life builders.

One thing is for sure…in this world we will encounter various trials and tribulations. Jesus said that we should take heart, or in other words be mindful that He’s already overcome the tribulations on our behalf. We get to choose how we will respond to trouble. Since, Christ has already won for us, our tribulations can only be harmful to us if we let them. Choose to respond with a smile and a positive attitude. Whatever you’re seeking is what you’ll find. Negative people always find the negative. If He never sleeps nor slumbers, there’s no need in both of you staying up and losing sleep. Choose a positive response and say “My God has already overcome this for me, so I will rejoice!!”
